Maria Florencia
Sarmiento is a Policy Analyst within the Economic Law and Policy Program at the
International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). Her primary focus
is at the dynamic intersection of international trade and voluntary sustainability
standards, as well as investment law policy in the context of sustainable
development.
She
has experience in mapping and analyzing sustainability initiatives, as well as
examining provisions included in trade agreements and domestic public policy
related to social and environmental issues. As part of IISD’s team, she
provides training courses, workshops, and a range of advisory services for
developing country officials.
Before joining IISD, Florencia was an independent consultant specializing in trade and investment matters. In this context, she has worked with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) on projects related to sustainable trade and investment governance.
Florencia completed her Degree in Law at the Catholic University
of La Plata (UCALP) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She obtained an LL.M. in
International Dispute Settlement (MIDS), a joint program offered by the Geneva
Graduate Institute and the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Currently, she
is in the final stages of completing her doctoral thesis in international law
at the Geneva Graduate Institute.
